Maruti Suzuki, India’s largest carmaker, has unveiled a prototype of its first flex-fuel car, the Wagon R Flex Fuel, at the 2023 Auto Expo in New Delhi. Flex-fuel cars are vehicles that can run on any blend of ethanol and petrol, from 20 percent (E20) to 85 percent (E85). Ethanol is a renewable and cleaner fuel that can reduce tailpipe emissions and dependence on fossil fuels. The Wagon R Flex Fuel is designed to run on any ethanol-petrol blend and will comply with the upcoming BS6 phase-II emission norms.
Maruti Suzuki Wagon R Flex Fuel Expected Interior Features
The Wagon R Flex Fuel prototype looks similar to the standard Wagon R on sale in India, except for some fluorescent badging and embellishments. The interior features are also expected to be the same as the regular Wagon R, which include:
- Seven-inch SmartPlay Studio with smartphone navigation, four speakers, and cloud services
- An idle stop-start system and hill-hold assist system in the automatic or AGS variants
- Steering-mounted controls, AC, keyless entry, all four power windows, electrically adjustable ORVMs, etc.
The instrument cluster or screen may have some changes to display the fuel level and blend ratio of ethanol and petrol.
Expected Exterior Looks of Wagon R Flex Fuel
The exterior of the Wagon R Flex Fuel prototype does not have any major changes from the standard Wagon R, except for the fluorescent badging and embellishments. The car has a tall-boy design with a boxy shape and a large windshield. The front grille has a chrome strip with the Suzuki logo and the headlamps are swept-back. The side profile has black cladding on the wheel arches and door sills. The rear has vertically stacked tail lamps and a roof-mounted spoiler. The car may have some subtle changes in the production version to differentiate it from the regular Wagon R.
Expected Safety Features
The Wagon R Flex Fuel is expected to have the same safety features as the standard Wagon R, which include:
- Dual airbags, rear parking sensors, front seat belts reminder, a high-speed alert system, and ABS with EBD
- Hill-hold assist in the automatic (AGS) versions
The car may also have some additional features to ensure the safety of the flex-fuel system, such as a fuel sensor, a fuel filter, and a corrosion-resistant fuel tank.
New Wagon R Flex Fuel Expected Launch Date and Price in India
The Wagon R Flex Fuel is still in the prototype stage and Maruti Suzuki has not announced any official launch date or price for it. However, according to some reports, the car may be launched in India by 2025. The price of the car may be slightly higher than the regular Wagon R, which starts from Rs. 5.55 lakh (ex-showroom). However, the running cost of the car may be lower as ethanol-petrol blends are cheaper than regular petrol. The availability of ethanol-petrol blends may also depend on the government’s policies and infrastructure.
